Plaka area guide

Things to do in Plaka

Plaka's sights are the Roman Agora with the Tower of the Winds (€10; 08:00–15:00 in winter), the Bath House of the Winds on Kyrristou (€5; closed on Tuesdays) and the island-style houses of Anafiotika. The Lysicrates Monument stands on a square of shaded cafés, and Agios Nikolaos Ragavas kept the bell that rang for liberation in 1833. On 28 October the state sites and the Bath House are free. The Acropolis entrances are on the south side, off Dionysiou Areopagitou.

Follow the path as it narrows towards Theorias, the stone-paved walk round the Acropolis, or go back to Agios Georgios for a view towards Lycabettus.

  4. Monument

    Monument of Lysicrates

  5. Church

    Agios Nikolaos Ragavas

A small domed church at the corner of Prytaniou Street and the Epiharmou steps, built over the columns of an ancient temple. Its bell, hidden in a crypt under Ottoman rule, rang in 1833 for the end of the occupation and again on 12 October 1944 when German troops withdrew.

Questions before you go

Can I go inside the Tower of the Winds?

No. The ministry closed its interior on 14 December 2019 until further notice. You see the tower from inside the Roman Agora, whose ticket costs €10 (reduced €5).

Are there free days?

Yes. 28 October is a free-admission day at the state sites, among them the Roman Agora and the Acropolis, and at the Bath House of the Winds. From November to March the Bath House is also free on the first and third Sunday of each month.

Can I walk up to the Acropolis from Plaka?

Yes, but the ministry lists its entrances on the south side: from Dionysiou Areopagitou along the Pikionis paving, or through the South Slope site, both by Akropoli metro. From Anafiotika the path continues as Theorias round the rock. Tickets cost €30; the site is open 08:00–18:00 to 31 October and 08:00–17:00 in winter. On 22 October 2026 the ministry reported its lift out of service.

When do the sites close in winter?

The Roman Agora closes at 15:00, with last entry at 14:40; from 16 to 30 October it is open 08:00–18:00. The Bath House of the Winds keeps 09:30–16:30 all year and closes on Tuesdays.
