Where to eat in Monastiraki

Eat in Monastiraki at Kostas, the souvlaki shop named after Agia Irini Square, at Diporto, a basement taverna in the market quarter since 1887, or on the A for Athens roof facing the Acropolis. The Central Market on Athinas is open 08:00–18:00 and closed on Sundays. After dark, Couleur Locale serves cocktails on its terrace until 01:00 and Baba au Rum pours rum every day until 03:00. Kostas and Diporto publish no hours, so call ahead.

    The hotel's rooftop restaurant and cocktail bar face the Acropolis, Plaka and Monastiraki Square. Breakfast runs 07:00–10:30 and the restaurant 16:00–24:00; the bar stays open until the early hours.     Couleur Locale

    On Normanou, a lane off the square close to the station: walk through The Project Gallery on the first floor to the bar on the second and the terrace on the third, which looks at the Acropolis. Bar bites, tapas and cocktails. Its menu page lists coffee 09:00–20:30, lunch 09:00–18:00, dinner 18:00–00:00 and cocktails 18:00–01:00; a rooftop guide gives slightly different hours, so check before a late visit.

    Diporto

    A basement taverna in the meat and fish market quarter, in business since 1887. A few dishes a day, usually small fry, Greek salad, broad beans in tomato sauce and boiled greens; chickpea soup is the speciality and retsina the house drink. No hours are published, so call before you go.

  6. Street market

    Central Market (Varvakios)

    The city's meat and fish market, inaugurated in 1884, with the fish hall in the centre of the building and the fruit and vegetable market across Athinas. Fish is sold by the kilo and the stalls will clean it for you. Small eateries such as Epirus and Karayiannis are in and around it.
