First-trip itinerary

Athens in 2 or 3 days

Two unhurried days connect the Acropolis with the historic centre. A third day is a choice between more culture and the coast, not a race to fit in both.

Before you set the order

Treat this as two full sightseeing days plus an optional third. Check your arrival and departure times, the forecast, current transport and official admission notices for your dates before fixing the order.

Day 1 — Acropolis, museum and Plaka

Let an official timed Acropolis entry set the morning. Visit the Acropolis Museum on a separate ticket, then slow down in Makrygianni and Plaka. Leave the evening close to your base rather than crossing the city for one more sight.

Day 2 — Syntagma and a central walk

Start around Syntagma and choose one of the two interactive walks: toward Monastiraki for the market and Psyrri, or toward the Acropolis Museum if you missed it on day one. Keep the National Garden or a museum as a quieter alternative.

Day 3 — choose culture or coast

For more culture, give one museum and its neighbourhood room to breathe. For open air, choose the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre or a stretch of the Riviera. Check the venue and transport details for your day; if you have only half a day, stay close to your base.

  • Getting around Athens

The historic core is walkable, and one cheap integrated ticket covers the metro, buses, trolleys and tram. A 90-minute ticket is about €1.20 (mid-2026), a 24-hour pass about €4.10, and contactless tap-to-pay now works on the readers. Most first-trip days need almost no transport at all.
