When to go
When to visit Athens
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the sweet spot: warm, walkable days and open sites without peak crowds. July and August are hot and busy — still doable if you start early and rest at midday. Winter is mild, quiet and cheap, with shorter site hours.

Spring and autumn are the sweet spot
From April to mid-June and through September into October, Athens is warm rather than hot, the light is good, and you can walk the historic centre and climb the Acropolis comfortably. Crowds are lighter than midsummer and prices are gentler than peak. This is the easiest window for a first trip.
Midsummer: hot and busy, plan around the heat
July and August are the hottest and most crowded months, and heatwaves can push temperatures well into the high 30s°C. Sites can briefly close during extreme heat. It is still a fine time to visit if you front-load sightseeing to the early morning, rest or head to the coast at midday, and go out again in the evening. Book Acropolis slots and air-conditioned stays well ahead.
The Athens Riviera and nearby beaches are at their best in summer, which pairs well with early-morning culture.
Winter: mild, quiet and cheap
Athens winters are mild compared with most of Europe — cool, sometimes rainy, rarely freezing. Sites and museums keep shorter winter hours but the city is calm and inexpensive, and the museums make strong wet-weather days. Check seasonal opening times before you plan a day around any single site.
